Craftsmanship - Coromandel Coromandel Unique, highly prized items in our collection, Coromandel screens and furniture originally came from the Coromandel coast in southeastern India. Antique as well as modern Coromandel pieces are extremely valuable because of how superbly made they are. Artisans begin the lengthy production process with a frame made of laminated wood. The piece is sealed and then covered with rice paper. Once the piece dries, a second coat is applied, which is dried and sanded. A third coat is mixed with lime, which solidifies into a hard finish. Then five or six coats of clay are hand-troweled on, dried, and sanded. Several layers of color are applied, and a rice paper drawing of the design to be incised is pasted on the item. Finally, the item is carefully carved with intricate designs. Bright colors are then painted into the cuts. Gold leaf may be applied to some or all of the design. As a final step, the piece is antiqued to soften the finish. You’ll appreciate these stunning, one-of-a-kind examples at Colorado Style®.
